Ductless Split Systems FAQs

Like a central system, a ductless mini-split system is an air conditioner split into two main components - an indoor air handler and an outdoor compressor/condenser.

The indoor unit is the evaporator side where a fan blows air to heat, cool, and dehumidify the space.  Most often, the indoor unit is wall-mounted, but at Friedrich, we offer several flexible indoor options, such as a hidden ceiling cassette, or our concealed ducted model, The Insider, which becomes virtually invisible when installed. The outdoor unit contains the compressor that pressurizes refrigerant gas and the condenser that facilitates heat transfer.

The indoor and outdoor units are connected by a conduit, housing the copper line set, a condensation drain line, power cables, and communication cables.  The conduit usually only requires a 3-inch hole through an external wall to run operation from the indoor to outdoor unit.  No ductwork is required, hence the name “ductless split system”.  One indoor unit paired to one outdoor unit is considered a single zone.  Multi-zone systems allow multiple indoor units to connect to one outdoor unit.  At Friedrich, we offer multi-zone options that independently condition up to four (4) separate zones using a single outdoor unit.

The speed and ease of installation and “no ductwork needed” are part of why ductless split systems are such a popular choice in the market today.

While you cannot mix and match between our Floating Air Select, Pro, and Premier series ductless mini-split systems, you CAN mix and match single-zone and multizone Floating Air Pro series units to expand your current single-zone / one-room application into a multizone / multi-room application.

Best results is to installed on a exterior wall, but if it is required to be installed on a non-exterior wall a field installed condensate pump will be required. You are also required to check and follow all local and national codes prior to installation.

Ductless mini-split systems can condition a single room or a whole house with our multi-zone systems. Because no ductwork is required, Friedrich ductless mini-splits can be installed almost anywhere... living rooms, bedrooms, new room additions and conversions, workshops or garages, to name a few.  They are also a great option for hotels and multi-family applications.

This option switches temperature sensing from the wall-mounted unit to the remote control.  

Yes! Most Friedrich ductless mini-split systems can operate in very cold temperatures, down to 0° F and even in some models as cold as -13° F.   As always, it's best to consult your professional HVAC installer to confirm the exact details based on your application.  

The turbo function in cooling sets fan to the highest speed and the compressor to its highest frequency in attempts to quickly achieve a 61 degree setpoint.

The compressor stops, the outdoor fan stops after a delay of 30 seconds; after 50 seconds the four-way valvesis powered off; and in 10 seconds the compressor starts and runs at "defrosting frequency".

It is recommended to have your unit cleaned at least once a year or once for cooling season and once again for heating season.

It's best to clean the filter of your indoor unit once a month or more depending on usage.  An annual professional cleaning should include cleaning the front cover, evaporator coils, blower wheel, and housing.

We recommend making sure the condenser coil, the base pan, and the condenser fan blade remain free of debris.

On indoor wall-mount units - Pull protrusions on left and right sides of the panel with fingers and open front panel all the way. Lift the center section of the air filter and disengage hooks. Remove the air filter by pulling it forward.

Friedrich offers great warranty coverage on ductless compressors and parts, lasting a minimum of 5 years. However, for Friedrich ductless units, it is required that a licensed contractor installs the system. If a licensed contractor doesn’t install the system, Friedrich will not honor ANY product warranty.

Friedrich does not offer extended warranties for labor or parts.
