Will the C-90 Air Cleaner remove odors?
The primary function of the C-90B Electronic Air Cleaner is to the rid the room of airborne pollutants such as dust particles, mold spores, pollen, pet dander, etc. The removal of odors is simply a by-product of the unit. With the C-90B, the pre-filter catches the larger particles as room air is drawn through the grille. Next, the electronic cell charges billions of microscopic particles as they pass through a powerful electric field. These charged particles are then attracted to the collector plates on the back side of the electronic cell rather than being dispersed back into your room. Now there is nothing but clean air going through the carbon filter back into your room. The carbon filter helps to remove the most common odors and fumes as the air is circulated back into the room. A musty smell is usually an indication of mold growing somewhere in the room. To rid your basement of this smell, you must first find where it is originating from and then remove the source. Once mold is already attached and growing somewhere, the spores are no longer airborne and cannot be pulled into the air cleaner.
Does the C-90 Air Cleaner emit ozone?
As with any electric appliance, the Friedrich Electronic Air cleaner does produce small amounts of ozone. During standardized industry testing at a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL), the highest ozone level measured was .014 parts per million (PPM). By comparison, the maximum allowable indoor concentration recommended by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) and UL is .050 PPM. Dust and other particles picked up by the cleaner will decrease this level. Ozone is highly reactive which means it breaks down quickly to oxygen shortly after it is created. Surfaces such as walls, drapes or furniture will increase the rate of breakdown.
