Friedrich P-Series PTAC Safety Information
Friedrich has identified a potentially serious safety problem with the heater assembly units used in certain Friedrich Packaged Terminal Air Conditioning (PTAC) units manufactured (or with heating units used as replacements in performing repairs) between November 1, 2002 and December 31, 2003.The problem is confined to units in the "P" series, with serial numbers ranging between LBLP00001 through LCMP99999 and any "P" series units that were serviced between June 1, 2003 and December 31, 2003 in which service included the field replacement of the heater assembly. The model and serial numbers are written on the nameplate which is attached to the unit behind the plastic front cover, directly below the control panel.
Friedrich has received reports of property damage arising from the fact that, in some cases, the rotary dial switch on the units can be inadvertently positioned between the High and Low fan speed settings, creating a rapid temperature rise that can lead to overheating, melting of the blower wheel inside the unit and a potentially unsafe condition.
Accordingly, Friedrich is conducting a voluntary recall of these units, working in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Anyone who has one or more of these units is urged to refrain from using it in the heating mode and submit product details via fax or call 1-866-585-2366 to schedule a free, on-site repair.
